Be part of the WPEL 2026 Course
From February 14 to May 16, 2025, educational leaders from Asia participated in Inward, Outward, Onwards: A Course on Whole Person Educational Leadership (WPEL). This certificate course aims to deepen the person of the leader, transform schools toward sustainability, and push boundaries of education through creativity and innovation.
The online modules were facilitated by featured experts in their respective fields:
Fr Johnny C Go, SJ for Reflective, Listening, Discerning, and Missioning Leadership
Dr Ma Assunta C Cuyegkeng for Missioning Leadership, Ecological Conversion, and Creativity & Innovation
Dr. Charlotte Kendra Gotangco Gonzales for Systems Thinking
Ms Abigail Marie T Favis for Sustainability & Integral Ecology
Mr Galvin Radley L Ngo for Adaptive Design for Learning and Educational Technologies
Ms. Marite P. Irvine for Innovation & Futures in Education
Dr Anne Lan K Candelaria for Developing Systems for Quality
Dr Regina M Hechanova Alampay for Building an Institutional Culture
Dr Antonette Palma Angeles for Partnerships for Learning & Growth
The course culminated in a 3-day leadership retreat held from May 14 to 16, 2025 at the JJ Atencio Lighthouse for New Learning in Areté. The participants also had an enriching visit to Intramuros, a famous historical site in Manila. The highlight of the retreat is the capstone project where the participants crafted and improved their WPEL roadmaps based on what they learned throughout the course, the context of their respective institutions, and from feedback from their peers.
Throughout the program, the participants were guided by their mentors, Dr. Edna P. Franco, Dr. Marie Joy R. Salita, Dr. Emily Ann I. Lombos, and Ms. Lillian S. Vergara, who facilitated their respective leadership circles throughout the course and the retreat. The leadership circles served as a way for the educational leaders to share insights with their peers and to converse with leaders from different contexts.
"This value-driven leadership becomes a catalyst for authenticity in the growth of those around us. Whether with colleagues or students, my focus has shifted towards fostering environments where they can grow holistically, developing not just in skills and knowledge, but also in character, relationships, and sense of purpose. The WPEL Program has reminded me that the true measure of leadership is not how many people follow us, but how many grow holistically because of the way we lead."

"I believe that effective leadership begins with self-awareness and self-example, extends to meaningful collaboration and service to others, and drives sustainable impact to the world. This WPEL program’s emphasis on whole person development aligns with my passion to lead with integrity, empathy, and vision."

"...I no longer see leadership simply getting things done but as a daily opportunity to lead with clarity, integrity, and compassion. The program has also given me the language and courage to align my leadership more closely with what I truly believe in equity, wellbeing, wholeness. It’s helped me reimagine what leader can look like in education: not reactive or top-down, but transformational and deeply human. Overall, WPEL has helped me become a more grounded, relational and values driven leader- one who leads not just with strategy, but with soul."

"It has provided confidence and assistance to realistic planning and programming. Having been there in the campus was a matter of educative exposure to see, know and witness the educative leadership of Ateneo.
An outstanding element of the program was the participation from different institutions and countries. Their sharing provided deep inspirational insight into the workings of educational context, policies and proceedings."

"The WPEL Program provided us with various insights. But one that I will always bring with me is that – In our fast-evolving world, be it the VUCA or BANI or whatever comes next, leaders should be able to adapt, and be guided by self-reflection and discernment, empathy towards others and commitment to the mission, which are all important aspects of leadership."
